Mason glared at the posh modern house he stood in front of. It was the place the Bledstone’s rented while they were staying here, terrorizing his family. He hadn’t gone on a recon mission in years but he could hear his heartbeat thumping in his ears as he surveyed his surroundings. This part of the neighborhood they lived in was filled with rich, privileged people who had no idea what kind of monsters they were living beside. Most of them were in their houses or sunbathing in their pools. It would be simple to break into the house then. Mason glanced around before lifting up his shirt and pulling out his revolver. Back in the day he had a whole arsenal at the ready to deal with people like this. Sniper rifles for long range, covert assassinations, semi automatic machine guns if the people wanted to make a scene, and of course simple handguns for protection. This revolver was all that was left of that arsenal he had and Mason hadn’t had a need to use it ever since he married Harley. His eyebrows furrowed together as his nostrils flared with anger, but now someone was trying to break up his family. The family he worked so hard to get back to and make a life with. He wouldn’t let that happen, and when nighttime cast it’s shadow across the world he would make his move. It was simple enough to break into the house. Surprisingly there wasn’t a security system he had to hack in order to get in. Once he snuck into the house and canvassed half of the downstairs, he realized there was no one around. Just as he was about to walk upstairs he noticed a faint orange glow coming from a part of the house he hadn’t checked. “Well darling, I do think someone has broken into our house.” Elizabeth sipped her champagne and smirked, “It seems they have. Good thing we disabled the alarms then.” Mason wasted no time in walking over and pointing the gun directly in Nathaniel’s face. Strangely enough neither one of them flinched. Neither one of them even seemed like they were afraid. “You aren’t taking Cullen away from us.” Nathaniel dropped his arms and tapped the sides of the chair with his fingers as Elizabeth stared on in silence. “My dear dear Mason. What makes you think you can stop me? Just because you brought a gun you think that will change anything?” Nathaniel’s cool gaze made contact with Mason and for a split second Mason hesitated and contemplated dropping the gun. “I can do things to you. Make you wish that I had pulled the trigger right here and now.” Elizabeth snorted which caused Mason’s gaze to flicker to her. “Darling, you aren’t the first person to hold a gun in our faces. You really think that we wouldn’t research your little family before we got here?” Nathaniel leaned his head back and tapped his chin, “Let’s see if I get this right. You’re Mason Brownstone, former assassin for the group known as The Organization. You were contracted to spy on the Belles but ended up falling for Harley Belle. Your boss found out and quickened his pace on ruining them but you decided to throw your life away to save theirs. What you didn’t know is you had two sons with Harley, and you didn’t know until you got out. Ever since then you’ve lived a quiet life with your little family.” Mason continued to glare at Nathaniel and didn’t lower the gun. Even if he did know who he was, it wasn’t hard for people to find out if they had the right resources. Nathaniel seemed to change his tactic when he noticed Mason wasn’t wavering, “I bet you wish my daughter had nothing to do with your son now. I bet you regret taking her in and giving her shelter. I bet-” Mason interrupted his sentence with a yell, “I don’t regret anything! The only thing I regret is not knowing what kind of evil people she came from. Clara is the sweetest, most innocent, and kind girl I’ve ever known! It’s a miracle she came out such a decent person when it’s from the likes of you!” Nathaniel shot up out of his chair and pressed the revolver to his chest, right to his heart. Only then did Elizabeth turn around and start to eye the gun nervously. “Do it then Mason. Kill me. Protect your family once more, but at what cost? You’ll probably be sent to prison for the rest of your short life, and even in there my “allies” would kill you before you got a peaceful death. What do you think would become of your family? Do you really think nothing bad would happen to them when both you and I are gone?” Nathaniel’s lips parted to reveal a toothy, evil grin, “Oh no...they will have a fate much worse than mine or yours. I will make sure they suffer. You see, Mason, I don’t ever go anywhere without having a backup plan if anything happens to me.” Nathaniel motioned to the gun buried in his chest, “You see if you pull that trigger and kill both me and my wife, as soon as my people find out they will come straight here to deal with your family.” Elizabeth glanced over her shoulder at Mason, “So what’s it going to be Mr.Belle? Will you risk your entire family dying at the hands of people worse than you can imagine., or will you take us to court and try to fight us there?” She let out a breathy sigh and shook her head, “Actually you won’t have much luck there either but you can try.” Mason lowered the gun and brought it to his face, he could hear the tink of his wedding ring as it collided with the metal on the gun. There were no options. There was no saving Cullen. There was no killing these awful people. Nathaniel passed by Mason and patted him on the shoulder as he headed upstairs, “There’s a good lad. Now run back home to your meager Estate and spend whatever time you have left with your family in peace.” When Mason arrived home he was in a delirious state and collapsed on the living room sofa. He was awoken by someone stroking his head and when he looked up he saw Harley smiling down at him. Mason felt tears prick his eyes because he knew he had lost.
For the first time in his life he couldn’t protect his family.
